Spare a thought for the billionaire owner of jewellery company Cartier, who has revealed that he’s kept awake at night by the thought of the poor rising up to overthrow the rich.
Pretty terrifying stuff, right?
Johann Rupert, who’s worth an estimated $7.5 (£4.8) billion, reportedly made the comments at a Financial Times summit in the billionaire’s playground of Monaco.
‘How is society going to cope with structural unemployment and the envy, hatred and the social welfare?’ he said.
‘We are destroying the middle classes at this stage and it will affect us. It’s unfair. So that’s what keeps me awake at night.’
He made the comments after he spoke about how recent Oxfam figures had suggested that the top 1 percent of the global population owns more wealth than the other 99 percent (quelle surprise).
Mr Rupert is also known for referring to himself as a ‘reformed prostitute’, after spending a decade working as an investment banker.
The struggle is real. Very real.
